Why Would Anyone Want to Play on Grass? 2010

The first official tournament for the UMaine Frozen Fury, “Why Would Anyone Want to Play on Grass? 2010”, happens to be our annual hosted tournament. We had eight teams attend from across Maine and two teams made the trip from Canada. The tournament was held on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of March inside of the university’s field house. The Frozen Fury has been practicing intensely in preparation for the spring 2010 season and we were eager to participate in this tournament.

Saturday March 6th

From the onset of the 2010 tournament, the competition present was easily seen. Our first game pitted us against the University of New England (UNE). The Frozen Fury has seen a history of Saturday woes and we were all determined to change this trend during the first tournament of the season. After gaining a quick 2-0 lead, the match seemed to even out. The score went to 6-3 when the Frozen Fury steamed ahead and took the first game 10-4.

The second game we faced our in state rivals the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). For many of the Frozen Fury members, there have been many bitter defeats by the hand of UMF. It was apparent in the demeanor of the team that we were energetic and pumped for this game. After dropping to a 1-3 deficit, the Frozen Fury evened the score at 5-5. After which, we dropped 3 quick points, leaving us with a 5-8 deficit with less than ten minutes reaming. However, we did not let this discourage us as the Frozen Fury surged to tie the game up at 8-8 as time ran out, pushing the game to universe point. We put in a fresh defensive line and came out victorious, winning 9-8! This was a very memorable moment for many, as some members of the team have been waiting 5 years to beat UMF. The frozen fury was off to a 2-0 start on a Saturday, something that was very different from the trends of the past.

The third and final game of the day was against the Suddenly Savage team hailing from Canada. They were a conglomerate of Spawn members and SOS members. We knew this was going to be a very strong and solid opponent. Unfortunately, the Frozen Fury came out slightly flat footed, dropping to a deficit early. We quickly regained our composure and began to fight back, but we were unable to overcome the early deficit, eventually losing 5-11. We did not let this discourage us however, because have a 2-1 record on a Saturday is a great improvement for the Frozen Fury and we plan on building off of this in the upcoming season. This game finished off the day for the Frozen Fury.

Sunday March 7th

We were faced with one of the top competitors present in the 2010 tournament, Red Tide which hails from the Portland ME area. Many Mogwai players had joined with the Red Tide to make for a very strong opponent. Unfortunately the strength and experience of the Red Tide team proved too much for the Frozen Fury in the end. But we made them fight for every point from beginning to end, eventually dropping the game 3-13. However, the score is very misleading as we played a solid game from beginning to end. The Red Tide eventually went on to when “Why Would Anyone Want to Play on Grass? 2010.”

After this tournament, the Frozen Fury is very excited for the upcoming outdoor spring season and has high expectations. We have all worked very hard during practices and have already seen the benefits during the first tournament of the season. We have our mind set and are ready to take on the challenges of the upcoming season!
