The squad went on to post four straight victories.

The first game on Saturday pitted UMaine against James Madison University. JMU came right out of the gates, scoring the first point of the match. The Frozen Fury were not to be outdone after letting up the first score and continued to score 15 consecutive points to take the game with a 15-1 final score. Keeping its momentum, UMaine made another great defensive stand, letting up only two points in the next two games against Florida Tech and Georgetown, both resulting in 15-4 final scores.

Great defensive plays helped pump up the sideline of the Frozen Fury while keeping their offense with the disc. Many of the rookies aided in an excellent zone defense, which held UMaine’s opponents to only nine points in four games.

“Personally, I learned a lot from this tournament, especially in terms of playing defense,” said rookie Rob Brouillard.

First-year player Brendan McKay also stepped up with his defensive plays.

“Overall, I feel we left everything on the field down in North Carolina. We played strong and well and that’s why we got to the championship bracket,” he said.

The Frozen Fury closed out their final game Saturday against Middlebury College, winning 15-4.

Coach Anthony Mourino explained that taking advantage of certain opportunities lead to Saturday’s victories.

“The offense capitalized on the competition’s mistakes and the defense forced many turnovers,” he said. “Because of this, the team dominated the competition and they were able to explode on offense.”

After impressive play on Saturday, the team went into Sunday with a first round bye as well as the No. 1 seed in a 20-team tournament. Sunday’s competition proved to be much tougher due to stronger teams and the exhaustion of playing four games the day before.

UMaine came out to a slow start for the first game against the University of North Carolina, but was energized by the stunning defensive plays by Sol Cooperdock and Tyler Gagnon, which powered its offense into taking the win 15-6.

Both Jeremy Baker and Josh Kahn were responsible for making difficult throws that led to scoring on both days.

“I feel like I contributed well. I played at a high level for most of the tournament,” said Jeremy Baker, who went on to receive the Most Valuable Player game disc for stepping up on defense and his endzone scores.

The semifinal game put UMaine against tournament host and defending champions UNCW. Although highly skilled, the UNCW team has a famous reputation of being headstrong and at times downright dirty. Although Josh Kahn was impressive with his full-field throws known as hucks, the Frozen Fury fell to a 15-5 loss after a heated game.

The tournament finished with UMaine against Cornell University, with the winner taking third place. UMaine came out flat, but persevered and put in effort, although the team was deflated after playing six hard games that weekend.

Cornell dissected the zone defense that the Frozen Fury utilized after it had been successful throughout the tournament. Cornell went on with a 15-10 victory, giving UMaine the fourth place spot.

Although the tournament ended in two losses, the UMaine men had no reason to hang their heads.

“Maine ultimate has come a long way in the past couple of years,” Mourino said. “This past weekend in Wilmington is the best I’ve seen Maine play ultimate.”

UMaine looks to continue their momentum this weekend as they head to another two-day tournament hosted by University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

The team is focusing on the annual sectionals tournament April 17 and 18, which UMaine will host.

Sectionals is the biggest tournament of the year, as there are three bids to go to the regional tournament if victorious. Tom Myers, a fifth-year veteran, is confident in Maine’s ability at the sectional tournament.

“The term ‘turning some heads’ has been used a lot with this team in the past, but based on our performance here I think we can place well and beat some talented teams in our section,” he said.

by Brian Chalifour
The tournament was held on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of March inside of the university’s field house. The Frozen Fury has been practicing intensely in preparation for the spring 2010 season and we were eager to participate in this tournament.

Saturday March 6th

From the onset even out. The score went to 6-3 when the Frozen Fury steamed ahead and took the first game 10-4.

The second game we faced our in state rivals the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). For many of the Frozen Fury members, there have been many bitter defeats by the hand of UMF. Hosted by Stonehill College, the Getskyy'd annual tournament regularly brings in teams from Rhode Island, New Hampshire and also Massachusettes. This year we decided to show the Commonwealth state how we play ultimate in the great state of Maine.
Ranked 11th in a tournament of 16 teams, Maine was fiery in their first game against the 3rd ranked team, Bently X from Waltham, MA. Maine held with the team for the entire game putting up score for score throughout the entire game. Down an injured offensive player and one point into the half Maine rallied through the 2nd and cheered boomingly the whole time. Bently's deep throws and scrappy calls won them the game 13-10. Not bad for a team that was ranked 8 seeds above them.
Second game was a blunder. Somewhat demoralized from the first game, the fury played lazily against 6th seed, Northeastern Y. After three points unanswered, Umaine kicked it into gear and chased them up to half time with a 7-5 score. Things picked up for Maine in the second half and with a new energy chased Northeastern point for point again all the way to a 9-10 score. Hardcapped at 11, northeastern managed to pull of a touchdown an win the game 11-9. "I hate losing to the squids" remarked Co-captain Russell Clark.
With a 0-2 record into the third game the Frozen fury was feeling finally fired up to play. Playing 14th seed Keene state, Maine was ready to trounce our only neighboring state. It was imperative that we show them who could play and to get a win for ourselves.
The teams lined up for the first pull. With Maine on the defense and the wind starting to pick up; "Big z?" questioned captain Josh Kahn. Everyone asserted consent. The disc was pulled and the team sprinted down there for the coveted callahan title. Keene, unimpressive in past, swung it quickly and booted the disc down the field for a score. It was unknown at this point if we were playing college ultimate or highschool pickup. The disc returned to play and Maine stuffed and scored for a 1-1 tie.
As the game went on more chippy calls we're made and yells from the sidelines increased. Tensions amongst both teams were high especially when some white hat wearing keene state player challenged our coach to come on the field. *note: due to the amount of profanity, the following quote can not be published. Keene state quickly realized that our coach was not to be confronted and gave him ample amount of space as he walked up and down the sideline.
It is noted here that due to the amount of Cannabis satvia Keene state insufflates, they were unable to remember which side they started on. They continued to argue that they pulled the disc when the whole time we were playing with a new Umaine Frozen Fury disc. "Why would we use your disc to pull to you?" asked our Coach. Keene was unable to support a resolve.
Down in the second half by 5 points, Maine made their largest come back to date climbing 7 points making the game 9-12, game to 13. Despite valient efforts by the team, Keene managed to slip one more in to win the game. Tired and spent, the fury returned to its den to lick its wounds.
We all know that sunday is the real day and no one knows this better than the Frozen Fury. Taking home chumpionship titles in Beasterns, April 09 and the Maine Event, September 09 the Fury was ready for its third overall chumpionship title. First up, Providence College out of Rhode Island. Playing nearly savage and with a female handler PC put it to the Fury but they were far more in tuned to the game. Running PC into the ground with fresh legs and effecient throws, the fury took their first win of the tournamnet 15-10. Next up, Bridgewater State in nearby Bridgewater, MA. The infamous 'assbombs' fielded large players and a tough cup but the Fury fought harder for the win. Despite Bridgewater trailing by 1 or 2 points the entire game, the Fury beat them to the catch and d'd up every sloppy throw to win the game 15-13. Third game of the day went to 15th ranked, Wentworth College. A little miffed by being beat by a 14th seed, the Fury was intent on not losing. Effort played off as the novice Wentworth was unable to make more than 3 points in the entire game. Final score: 14-3. It was imperative that the Fury not get complacent as their fourth and final game of the day was to Northeastern, once again.
Suffering so many injuries that the Northeastern "gentleman" had to pool their A and B teams together, it was apparent that the Fury was playing practically the same game as before. As northeastern turned over the disc in midfield on the first point, a player pulled the disc deep. As it floated out the back of the endzone, senior Russell Clark attempted the famous Greatest attempt - jumping from in bounds, catching the disc in mid air and tossing it back into play in hopes that someone will catch it. The greatest was made and caught by sophmore Peter Strand for a 1-0 lead against Northeastern. The "gentleman" acted more like children throughout the game, making chippy calls. Clean handblocks and d's were called contested regularly and even Northeastern teammates on the sidelines disagreed with their onfield players calls. Both teams played their hardest but the final score made went to 9-12, Northeastern. Dismayed, the fury returned to their bench thinking that their chumpionship title had been taken. However, the Stonehill captain in charge of the tournament came over and gave the best news of the tournament. Because northeastern, 2-1 on sunday, forfieted their first game 0-15, the UMaine Frozen Fury, 3-1 on sunday, would walk away with the prize!!

Great playing to all of Umaine's Players. A great improvement has been seen in everyone all across the board. Player of the tournament went to Senior Cody bishop for his great work in the endzone. Honorable Mention to Kevin Parsons for his quick speed and tireless effort while playing zone D.Joshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13070374430653683948noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1444399464363894401.post-82963739251121668262009-10-01T09:01:00.001-07:002009-10-01T09:01:09.132-07:00Frozen Fury impressive over weekend tourneyFrozen Fury impressive over weekend tourney

Posted using ShareThisJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13070374430653683948noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1444399464363894401.post-61371086763832906902009-09-28T09:51:00.000-07:002009-09-28T09:55:38.673-07:00Tournament RecapThanks to the organizational skills of Captain Josh Kahn and the University of Maine, the first annual Maine Event was a success. 8 teams - UMO, UMF, Bates, Colby, Blackfly, UMPI, UNE, Bowdowin - competed for the title of the winners of the Maine Event.

In first place came the University of Maine at Farmington with a final score of 13-11 over Colby. Besides the record number of new players coming out, it also looks like the Frozen Fury will be hosting a brand new tournament on the 27th of September. If you've been keeping track or better yet, coming to practice, this is all old news to you. Perhaps you've even noticed that UMaine will also furnish a furious Woman's team! What time could be better than now to play ultimate for the University of Maine at Orono.

For some of us, this is our last year playing for the flagship of Maine. We've toiled at practice, in the gym and on the field for hours just to get to this point. Without a doubt, this is the biggest and the most skilled team that the frozen fury has ever put on the field. I look forward to this year with the utmost anticipation.

-Vice President, Russ "Twiz" ClarkJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13070374430653683948noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1444399464363894401.post-39900997737449046952009-09-04T08:12:00.001-07:002009-09-04T08:12:54.236-07:00THE MAINE EVENTUMaine's 1st Annual Ultimate Tournament
9/27

UMaine's first annual ultimate tournament will include teamsfrom all across Maine.
